Rakesh Malhotra, MD, MPH
Dr. Rakesh Malhotra. MD, MPH received his medical degree from the PGIMS, Rohtak, India where he completed his internships and internal medicine residency. He then went on to further complete his internship for internal medicine at James J. Peters VA Medical Center in New York, NY and his internal medicine residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ, New Jersey). Dr. Malhotra completed his Clinical and Research Nephrology fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, one of the premier nephrology fellowship programs in the United States and is currently Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Additionally, Dr. Malhotra graduated with a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from San Diego State University and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from the University of Maastricht. He is Assistant Clinical professor of Medicine at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Malhotra is author or co-author of several peer reviewed scientific articles and has presented oral lectures at national and international meetings. He is a member of Monitoring Dialysis Outcomes (MONDO), 0-25 AKI ISN, American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation and American College of Physicians.
Dr. Malhotra specializes in the treatment of acute and chronic renal failure requiring dialysis including peritoneal dialysis. His practice includes care for a wide range of kidney disease including diabetic kidney disease, glomerular lesions, including glomerulonephritis and evaluation of resistant and secondary forms of hypertension. He has also developed expertise in the evaluation, management, and prevention of kidney stones (nephrolithiasis).
Dr. Malhotra’s primary research interest focused on identifying mechanisms that contribute to progressive loss of kidney function and its complications and improve the quality of life of hemodialysis patients. Other areas of interest include nutritional and metabolic aspects of kidney disease with focus on inflammation and oxidative stress and translational and epidemiologic studies of Acute Kidney Injury.
